EC North Dakota | Basis is really nothing but a way to compare a buyers price to the board price.
It's sometimes called transportation because a buyer can't have too poor of a basis or someone with supply will transport the grain over to fill the better demand.
Basis likely did start at zero for someone in a specific locale, at a certain time, etc...etc...
What it comes down to is, everyone's price is different "based" off the Chicago market, according to their local supply and demand.
