Penn Yan, NY | Buckwheat was a traditional quackgrass control around here. I had a field that I lost 50% of the 2014 crop in because of quack and approached it like this:
fall 2014 planted triticale and winter peas to create a deep shade and to be harvested for forage before the quack had much chance to store energy in the spring, then plowed shallow (5-6 inches) then allowed the ground to lay and used a spring tooth drag to drag the rhizomes out on top during hot breezy weather twice, kinda a stale seedbed approach.
Planted buckwheat the middle of July and have allowed that to grow along with volunteer winter peas through the rest of the summer.
Inspections in the worst quack areas from before showed almost done growing now, we will see what it looks like next year, plan to go to corn.
Have used a similar approach in the past in smaller thinner patches with good results
