FWIW, We were going to line a cinder block and mortor pit with fire brick, the fire brick guy said that we needed to have a few inches of space between our fire brick and the cinder block.  The fire brick tight against the cinder would not deflect the heat enough to protect the mortor.  In our case we didn't have enough room to do that so we bagged the idea.
