Subject: RE: uneven maturing oats

SW Minnesota
Had this problem with our oats last year. We had 20" of rain in the first 20 days of June last year, and I think with the abundance of moisture, the oats tillered out after all that rain and that was what was still green later on. We ended up delaying cutting it at least 10 days after we thought it was ready to cut. But like another poster said, be ready to swath it ASAP if there is even a chance of a storm coming to flatten it. I was out of town last week and planned to start cutting my oats last Saturday but we got a freak localized storm Thursday evening that dumped 3/4" rain in about 20 minutes, along with some 30-40 mph winds - pretty much flat as a pancake. Just got done cutting it today - NOT FUN!
I have not had oats down that bad in my whole farming career. One field I even had to cut one way just to get under it with the swather - THAT took a long time!
