How late can you guys in the Midwest that are dealing with wet conditions Plant beans ? I just wondered how late you would push them , and what group beans do you plant ? The planters have been parked here for the last week waiting for rain . Doug

We plant mid threes to low fours for maturity. We pretty well have to be done. I haven't seen beans planted after about the 8th of July do much.

My neighbor finished up last year July 2. I finished July 4 with a 2750 CHU. I wish that would have been the latest ever but it looks like this year will be July 11. If we don't get the heat units, I suppose I can always treat then as a cover crop and plant buckwheat or peas a little later. Wheat would be nice but the ground is too wet for that.

Probably have a week left here maybe a little longer depending on what the forecasts look like and what each persons individual insurance situation is. Mostly 4 to 4.5 maturity at this point in time.

Typically go to July 8th after peas with something like an 06 maturity. A risk worth taking most years.

We will try up to mid july with late group 2 beans. One year we got nothing and most years 15 to 20 and a couple times 30 bpa. No Frost until Oct 7th and you will get beans. Just got to wait until Mid November to harvest and hope no snow is flying. Sure beats weeds we have found out.

It's getting time to quit here. I've gone as late as July 17 with a Group 2.9 soybean. That was DC after wheat. I only planted about half the field, started wondering what I was doing out there and quit. Those beans made about 35 bpa, made me wish I'd finished the field. We had a pretty warm sunny fall that year, if it had been cool and cloudy in September or October they probably wouldn't have been worth harvesting.

This year I finished the replanting July 4th, with a 3.3 bean. Just depends on the fall weather if they make it or not.

I planted 2.3s the 3 of July after the tile guy didn't show up in time. Had 8 bu beans after they froze.

In 2010 I planted my beans July 2-3 because I had done a bunch of tiling and had many rain delays. Perfect weather afterwards with late frost and avg 48 bpa. Better then neighbors early May beans that got SDS.

I replanted or patched in some last week on 2nd and 3rd and just coming up now. Will see how it turns out.

A farmer close to me bush hogged his corn crop in 2012 and planted 4.8 maturity beans behind the corn on July 15th. Needless to say he should have planted a 4.0, because the frost got them and they were never harvested. They were looking good up until the frost though.

I know our DC beans really start dropping off after 7/18-10. A few years ago we planted some dc beans on 7 / 10 and got rained out. Finished 7/15. The beans planted on the 10th made 33 bpa, those on the 15th were under 10. FWIW, same field. Later it gets the fuller maturity beans we plant. If I didn't have crop insurance I would risk it & plant. With crop ins I would take the PP. Don't let pride stand in your way of taking a ins payment. If you're like us you've paid in a lot more premiums than what we've received back. Even in my worst year I never got enough back to cover my premium.
