I sure do like the looks of the 15" covers some of the guys are doing now. If you have guidance and can plant between the rows you wouldn't have to fight a huge amount of residue if gets away from you.

If you want winter kill it's hard to beat oats. My favorite is Crimson clover going to corn. You get the legume nitrogen benefit and the seed is usually cheaper, plus in my area it won't winter kill so I get good growth in the spring.
