What growth stage was the rye when you put the N on? You mentioned that there wasn't a lack of moisture, it could be that the rye roots didn't go deep because of enough moisture in the top portion of the soil profile but the soil being sandy allowed the N to move down out of the rooting zone before the rye could use it, when it needed it the most.
