My principles are:

*get residue on the ground
*do not mix residue into soil because I cannot manage residue once it is below the soil surface
*I want residue coverage as equal as I can make it on every square inch of the field. This means not shredding the stalks as shredded stalks will be blown around by the wind and create heavy matts of residue in places
*make sure my seed zone is void of residue, both below ground and above ground

In areas where we do a poor job of managing this residue properly we definitely see it affect emergence/stand/yield. When we do these things well we see very even emergence, very good stands, very good residue break-down, and very good yield.
