SE PA | Scott, It's important to manage cash crop production in the context of cover crops. With cereal rye, assume no N at planting. (different, if legumes are in the mix) More N needed up front, less later in the year and/or in a few years down the road. Have a planter capable of handling the cover crop. Be vigilant with insects but what most of us have seen is that once you are a few years into this system, nature seems to balance things out with predators and insects are not so much of a problem. Be willing to add another layer of management to your farming system. Be a student of the concept. Cover Crops are a simple concept but complex to make them work. Ask any farmer who "appears" to be successful with cover crops and they will tell you they haven't figured it all out. Treat your cover crops like your cash crops and you will stand a better chance of success! | |
