The N content in a bushel of corn varies but #s typically fall between 0.6-0.8 lbs N/bu with an average about 0.7 lbs/bu

Average N application rates in the Corn Belt are considerably higher than 0.7 lbs N/bu harvested but some farmers consistently apply less than 0.7 lbs of N/bu.

When environmental conditions favorable for N mineralization (i.e., release of N from soil organic matter) are followed by environmental conditions favorable for leaching, tile drainage water can contain > 10 ppm nitrate-N without any application of N fertilizer.

Optimum management of the 4 Rs (i.e. right nutrient source, rate, timing and placement) and other management factors reduce the likelihood of N loss through tile but soil type and weather are also big factors that can trump management.
