Subject: RE: Corn planting depth

Concordia, KS
.5 inches below the moisture line. Maybe even a little deeper if it is low residue, freshly tilled soil. I have planted milo 2.75 inches deep and got a stand, my preference is to have corn at least 2 inches down. I worked with a producer in Eastern North Dakota that had never planted much more than 1.5 inches. After riding and digging, I suggested planting closer to 2 inches due to close and dry dirt. He was nervous about going that deep, but tried anyway. That fall in the combine, he called and the corn was 30 bushels better and a point or 2 dryer where we went deeper. I'm quite a ways east of LHaag, and agree completely with what he said, but I have seen very few times that erring on the shallow side of things is better than deep. We generally plant beans at at least 1.25 inches deep and milo at least 1.5.
