The Thumb
They do control the browser in that they make the only rendering engine for a browser on the ios, even if you have say google chrome installed it still uses apple's rendering engine to display any web pages. But you can go to any web page you want and it is theoretically possible to get a virus or get rooted as they might call it from a web page, for a brief period you could jailbreak your phone simply by visiting a web page, which in a sense root's your phone and installs software that apple doesn't want you to, but apple fixed that flaw quickly, and they would fix any flaw that could do the same maliciously quickly but it is not impossible.
Really one reason that an antivirus isn't required on any ios device is because apple sandboxes any program and that would include any antivirus, which means that any app on any ios device can only access it's own resources, or with permission given access the photos or contacts. There are certain way's apps can pass information back and forth to other programs but any antivirus would need to scan the entire device for malicious apps which isn't allowed by apple, and since you can only install apps from apple by the time any antivirus app would know something is a virus apple would also and would remove that app itself. Then the only thing you would be looking for with an antivirus app is an app that could tell if your ios device is rooted which if your device has been rooted it would be trivial for the hackers who rooted your device to simply disable any antivirus scan making it appear that your not hacked.
So I don't see any need for antivirus app on an ios device now or really I don't think there ever will be unless it is built in from apple, but really the system was built for security from the start and is about as safe as you can get because it's so restricted, safety and security was far more important than almost anything else when they designed ios.
