SC Wisconsin | Were you using Adobe to access the PDF's, or using the new PDF viewer in windows 8? Because the solution for the issue may be different, depending on what you have.
I've had some luck with Window's self-repair utility. It's easy to try, and you aren't out anything to do it. I've attached a link to the Microsoft article on it - it's written in pretty basic terms.

If you have a restore point saved prior to the "bug" the easy route might be to restore your computer back to that point. I recently had a similar registry issue and ended up having to do a system refresh. The good news is you get a brand spanking new copy of Win 8 installed on your computer, without losing any of your files. The bad news is that it does delete all the programs off your computer so you have to reinstall them. This is a last ditch thing to do, if nothing else works. I've attached a link that talks about restore, refresh and reset. Reset is the nuclear option, and one that you shouldn't need.
