Colby, Kansas | Ham,
I am by no means an expert as my previous experience has only been through researching it on our farm. This fall will be the first we do on a commercialized basis. We will be planting 5-6 lbs/acre in 10" spacing. Last year we planted in 7.5" spacing but have since traded that drill for an airseeder. At the time of purchase my father and brother didn't feel they could justify the cost difference between a 10" spacing and a 7.5" spacing model, thus we ordered 10". In our environment the difference in wheat yields is very small, if it even exists between 10 and 7.5. However as you move towards eastern Kansas thre is a pronounced yield response to narrower rows. We will not windrow, it will be direct cut or possibly we may even use our stripper header.
Thanks for your reply, always interesting to hear how others do this or that.
