Could be a driver issue if both those things are plugged in USB.
In device manager you should be able to find USB ports listed and use the right click menus to look for updated drivers.
In my experience this is rarely successful and it's a better plan to hunt online for driver downloads from the maker's website.
If there's any yellow triangles in there you have a problem. 

Truth is at ten years old you got your money's worth.
You could consider re-installing the XP(?) with minimal programs installed, and keep it off line for records, accounts, printing etc if you got a new one of some kind. 
My old PC has run continuously as a weather station logger  for about three years now.
