Rolla, ND | People like to just go and rip when they want to but that is dangerous. You better only rip if the groung is dry at ripping depths. You rip it wet and your fields have never had compaction that bad.
Secondly, it depends on your soil makeup. Shrinking swelling clays fight compaction as they get wet and dry out. If you have those soils, occassionally a yield increase will result, but over the long term, ripping is a loser.
If your soils are older clays and you have compacted them, ripping is an option.
If you go to management techniques lik no till that improve soil structure your compaction takes care of itself. Big responses to ripping is really a sign of unhealthy soils and ultimately it tends to work better to figure out how to get them healthy rather than constantly trying to fix a symptom of their unhealthiness. | |
