Vertical till with a Landoll is what I have gone to ahead of beans. Usually hit it a month before planting if the conditions are OK. Yes, vertical till machines are not cheap but neither are chopping cornheads and I use my vertical till machine for other purposes. You can run them fast and my fuel usage is around .35 gallons per acre. Soybean emergence and early growth is so much better now that I have gone to vertical till. The planter performs better on the tilled ground too. Also, I think by laying all the residue down the beans harvest a little better.
