Really nice* morning here today. Gusting to 55 mph, letting up to only 40mph right now. I really think about 90% of the dirt in the air is coming off the county roads and pivot roads and turn rows. I don't see that many fields moving.
This will plug an air filter pretty quick:
Some of the worst wheat we have. Still some green tillers there, but fading fast:

This is some of the best wheat we have. Still pretty much green, but getting a gray tinge to it:
If no rain the next couple weeks, we are looking at FOUR YEARS of no wheat harvests. I don't want to hear any more about the "devastating drought of 2012" in the midwest again. And since I know somebody from the midwest will ask what we will plant on failed wheat ground, we won't plant anything. It is sitting on top of 6' of dry soil. That is why it is failing. We don't get 20 inches in the growing season like other parts of the country. We have to "bank" moisture by fallow periods ahead of planting. It will be fallowed AGAIN for the 4th summer in a row, and probably go back to wheat next fall. We'll see, but it ain't looking good right now. |
