Paradise KS | Yes dad was 43, I have two older brothers. One is 39. and has a kid that is 14 and the other is 30. They came to early to be interested in the farm. The oldest had to deal with the 80's and early 90's. He saw the strain that it put on the family, and dad was still young then. The middle brother has always been more of a preppy type, he lives in the suburbs of kansas city now, but he has learned big city life isnt all its cracked up to be. He likes to come back and help with harvest now. Being that neither one really showed any interest dad never did any upgrading. He was sat in his ways and liked things the way they were. Then i decided that i wanted to be part of agricultural, that kinda screwed everything up haha. My mother was very insistent that i didnt come back. My dad took it all in stride and helped when he can. I bought 50,000 dollars worth of equipment as soon as turned 18 and could get a loan, thats when i started doing custom harvesting. Once I did that there wasnt anything to stop me from continuing to grow, even mom gave up on me.
But i still attended college, Both parents pushed me to do that. I went to two-year college, then decided to go to K-state. I payed for everything except for one 5000 dollar student loan. Now 5 years later and 3 degrees later im pretty well set up to do anything i want. But i continue to choose the farm.
No I wont give up the off farm income, it pays really well, and i can work when ever i want too. So i keep buy with that in the off season, then turn attention back to the farm when that tapers off. | |
