I run my finger gently across them. If they feel smooth replace them. If they feel sharp and the serrations want to grab my finger I feel they are ok. With a little practice, you can tell by looking at them. Obviously, if they are not cutting, they need to be replaced. I don't know how soybeans cut, but I figure somewhere around 5000 acres on a 30' head for 35 bu wheat straw.
