Friction ring allows for easy tool free changing of sockets. Other style has a pin and requires a tiny rod or screw driver to push pin in. If I know I'm gonna be changing sizes frequently I just put on a little 2" extension or put a piece of welding rod in my pocket. 18v 1/2" can produce ~400ft/lb torque and I have broke smaller bolts with mine. The 1/2" is a little bulky so I don't know what size space you're getting into but the 3/8 is pretty nimble. Not sure on the power specs of the 3/8, because I have a Ryobi 3/8 and a Milwaukee 18v with the pin. Enjoy the heck out of my 18v
