Subject: Manure problem out east, whats the truth?

E.Central MN
Talking to an avid hunter yesterday and he tells me this story about the huge manure stockpiles out east that the farmers can't get rid of, supposedly they just go bankrupt and walk away and leave this environmental mess. I guess he was talking about some area like the Chesapeak Bay area. Anyway, I said it doesn't make sense, manure is a commodity that has economic value in most parts of the country. There may be restrictions on application in some situations, but it still has value. I heard the same stories a few years ago about slurry stores that were left full and how expensive it was going to be for the authorities to clean it up....what?? its fertilizer not some toxic site of heavy metals. Just wondering if anyone has actually heard of such a thing happening.
