rain/wet snow with 50+mph wind likely just dropped their ambient temp to low.
then a couple days of wind and snow on top of that....just a bad deal.

if this storm would have come 30 days later just would not have been much if any freezing rain with it.
snow is warmer.
bunch of cattle would have been gone. a lot of cattle leave mid oct.

cattle left would be off summer grass and on fall / winter grass with some protection topography.
