| Wow, your kid seem pretty well interested in the world around him.
Keep his curiosity and interest up!
If there's no fossil, he might still find arrowheads.
And he would be at the right height too! ;)
His little size and little hands would also be perfect for weeding: Plant some perennial herbs like thyme, chives and sorrel that need frequent weeding until well established. Then simply bake sorrel and parboiled salmon in filo pastry and sacrifice the dish to the gods, because it's simply too delicious for humans to eat...
My grand-pa used chicken wire for his garden, but he planted small fruit shrubs along the wire under a black polyethylene film, like gooseberries and black and red currant, it hid the wire most of the year and prevented most of the weeds. Don't know what can grow at your location though.
