SE Kansas | Checking my last spring calving heifer, must have had this calf in last 24 hrs. 2 week calving window on these 6 heifers - been positively suprised with little to no problems. They all calved on their own, cleaned up real nice and are milking and caring for their calves.
First pic is the last spring calf. I think her momma was late as it's a biggin where most of the other calves looked like 75-85 lb calves (over last 2 weeks). I'm thinking this calf was probably in 100 lb range which is definitely on the high side.
Next 2 pics is of my baldie making machine -- registered low-birth weight Angus bull AI'd out of Rito 6EM3 which is a calving ease deluxe sire. He's 15 months old, approximately 1100 lbs and seems to be doing good with these open heifers and the one momma.
Last pic is of the new momma to the pictured calf. Pretty good looking udder, good condition although she hasn't slicked up like the others.
I've got 13 cows and one 15 month bull in this pasture (30 acres). I've got 5 1st calf heifers with 2 week old calves on side and 18 bred heifers in other pasture. My dilemma is do I bring the other 5 mommas and calves into the same pasture as bull (he would need to service 18 cows) on 30 acres or leave the other 5 pairs with the bred heifers in same pasture and get me another bull?? I've found a real slick Hereford bull with L1/Felton breeding that I want to get....think I may just pull the trigger on him.
