Henderson, Michigan | Efficiency isn't how fast you read but how much information you retain in what you read in the amount of time that you had. Being efficient reading, is the same as planting or harvesting or baling. Quality over quantity any time.
Even online forums find this to be true, people generally will not waste time re reading posts that contain the same information. It is the posts that contain new information that is readily available that changes how efficient you can read.
In college, I became somewhat of a skim reader...not to gain speed but to more readily access the information that I was looking for. I looked for in the text i was reading certain words that would help identify whether the piece was worth reading or if it gave me something new to read.
I had to read journals for teaching, on many different subjects and it seemed as many had the same thing to say over and over again. So i started the key word edition of reading. There are times when it doesn't work, such as reading a novel, but in reading informative texts such as textbooks, operations manuals, and online forum it helps me process the data more efficiently and gives me a better depth of understanding or controlling what I put in my brain.
Its like looking at the index in the back of the book and finding that one particular piece that interests you or is what you are seeking...then flipping to that exact page and reading new information. Only able to do it from the front of the book through skimming the material.
I have been teaching this style of reading to my kids at school, so they can more efficiently and effectively answer questions and discern what the text is trying to say. Most kids read the book, but rarely understand it, because it is written to a word, not to the complete text.
Hope this helps...
