I think it depends on the weather conditions at the time, how you set up your pile , etc . If its cold ( below freezing) and you pile on high/dry/ hard ground I bet you could pile it for a month and be ok, if its warm/gets rain on and piled on none compacted grass you will be very lucky to store it more than a day or two. Our co-op has started ( the last 4-5 yrs)to pile corn in the fall ( usually dry but last two years has seen wet piled as well) with very little spoilage. Keep in mind that even 'very little" (less than .5%)looks like a lot of grain when the piles can be 500k bu or more. So far any spoilage has been able to be blended out so any "real" loss has been very very minimal.
