The problem is, it becomes a popularity contest then.   I've seen sites where two people could post the same thing and one would get a bunch of thumbs up, and the other would get a bunch of thumbs down.   Everyone here has a few people that they've rubbed the wrong way so a like/dislike system could get ugly in a hurry.

This way works.   At least it works good enough for me.

+1. I can see a "ratings system" running off some folks. Most people on here have made posts that weren't stellar. Yes some more than others but I'm not sure we all need to be called out on it. Maybe I'm just rightfully afraid of it. If you post something and it gets "disliked" would you be less likely to post anymore? I know I would. Leaves it wide open for abuse from posters with an axe to grind too.

Unfortunately, so many seem to post here for the "strokes".  I don't remember when I have ever gone to FaceBook - maybe led there by a link - but from what I hear, FB is much the same.  I guess that is okay for those trying to "find" where they belong in life, but it seems like a pretty poor avenue for discovery.

The encouragement is always sweet and the put-downs sting, but if someone does not have the time or sincerity to make proper comment in reply, I don't see that a shallow software generated "button" will have much meaning.  It is merely a distraction.

Change is not always improvement.

I guess many of recent generations have had "mobiles" since their graduation to the crib so they need something with glitter, something a little flashy to keep them from getting bored with the routine of living, learning and helping.  At what point does living become all about the glitter, not about the learning and helping?
