| I agree with the diagnostic it could be pretty much anything hardware or software related, not necessarily the hard drive.
A hard drive failure will most of the times be progressive, like sometimes not booting up, sometimes freezing while running, sometimes clicks and noises from the mechanical parts. Same with a bad memory stick, except for the noises! ;)
If you have the money, definitely get a new Windows 7 desktop, investigating what could go wrong could take days, and quite a bit of money too if you don't have spare parts lying around.
Most importantly, this time, invest in a big fat external drive for backups and archiving too. And burn a restore DVD or flash drive so you can restore the system if it fails again. Or use a disk cloning program for your USB drive so you can boot from it if the main hard drive goes wrong. | |
