Subject: RE: Hearing Aids?

North End I-15
I'm 72 , been hard of hearing most all my life . Years ago I bought a set of Starkey in the ear aids . My dad had been going to a dealer in Canada . With currency exchange they were half of what a set would cost here . ($1200 at the time ) I was never able to wear the in the ear ones for any length of time because of plastic allergies ? the made my ears gunky ,itchy , etc.

My brother is nearly deaf also but works in the TV broadcast business . He does commercial production . One of his clients was /is a hearing aid dispenser . He got me a nice discount on a set of at the time top end Phonak behind the ear hearing aids . They are programable for your loss of hearing frequency. I have 5 different settings on mine . One for "normal situations " , noisy situations , quiet situations , music , and TV /phone, and a wife mode .... (off) Also has noise suppression where they automatically shut down for a brief moment . Like in firing a rifle , hitting hammer on anvil . Any spike in decibels over ? and they do there thing .
They communicate with each other , turn one up the other automatically adjusts to same level.
With the remote control you can adjust each ear to different levels .
They are expensive , dog ate mine 3 times . First two times it cost $250 to replace . Last time $1895
I got a good discount . normal retail on these is close to $3000. It i$ a rip off but then they come with life time of ear bud replacements , and readjustments for hearing changes .

Noisy environments are still a tough situation . Particularly in large rooms . Not a perfect solution but workable .
Those with severe hearing loss will be totally irritated by all the new distracting "noise " you will hear . I about drove the wife nuts asking what the sounds were . First time in years can hear refrigerator run , deep freeze , water pump in basement , wind whistle in car windows , strange humming , buzz's etc.
I have and old ford pickup I bought off a street in Great Falls . Started it up , ran great , took a test drive , bought it . Got hearing aids a few days later , OMG the thing sounds like the tappets are going to fall out ! :>) Been running like that for years now .:>)

My hearing aid guy is 120 miles one away . But he does make monthly visits to the senior centers in the various county seats closer @ 40/60/80 miles away.

The behind the ear ones are better for me . I don't have a vanity problem . Don't need the little stuff them in the ear ones .
Brother has in the ear ones . His wrist watch controls the programing . Have no idea what they cost.
