| I stayed at a Super 8 out close to the airport once, had no complaints, wasn't a huge room. Best I recall there was just room for the full bed and a chair.
I stayed at the Sheraton West out on west University a few blocks north east of the west mixmaster once. Don't recall any bad things.
Navigation to the Historical Society building from any of the suburbs is not difficult. Take I-235 and get off at east 6th or east 14 th. Its between them on the south side of Grand. East 14th runs from Ankeny to Indianola (indeed US69 runs from Albert Lea MN to Kansas City, MO and beyond, but in southern Iowa I-35 is the better road and parallel) and is a major thoroughfare. Grand Avenue runs from the fair grounds through West Des Moines to I 35 except for a bridge out in West Des Moines. University runs from Ottumwa to west Des Moines (IA 163 east of Des Moines) but there is a serious jog out west that is not marked. The area between the capital and the fairgrounds is not prime real estate these days, you could find speaking spanish a benefit there.
Pick a place you like by the reviews and price and commute, its a whole 15 minutes even at rush hours (more like minutes most days).
