I used the myfitnesspal app for iPhone and have gone from 215 at Christmas to 187 on Monday. Use it regularly and it helps to keep me aware of what I'm doing calorie wise. I still eat a Snickers almost every day, so it's not about depriving yourself, just actively managing your intake of and use of calories.
