near dyersville iowa | The biggest problem I have with feeding hay in rings is the issue of bunk space. For example, I have 40 cows which need about 2000 lbs of feed a day, maybe a little less, but this is easy math. So if you put 2 1500 lb bales out a day you are over feeding, but the 40 head have enough space so they can all get to feed at the same time, reducing the effect of the boss cow. But because that is 1.5 days worth of feed, you have to feed alternating mornings and nights or there will be waste simply because of overfeeding, or you end up underfeeding to make less waste. Im pretty much at capacity at 40 head, so ive begun making 1000 lb bales to help eliminate this problem. There really is not that much waste to bale rings if they clean everything off the bottom. I find if I overfeed I have much more waste, Its much easier to determine how much to feed when you have a scale and a mixer wagon, but there are other ways to do it as well. | |
