I would argue that the time for us to make the difficult decisions is before the water is gone.
That would be the obvious thing to to, but trying to get everybody to work together and figure out an inteligent way to conserve water is like trying to herd cats. Some members of the Oklahoma Water Resources Board would prefer us to stop irrigating completely, and a lot of the farmers think we can pump like there's no tomorrow. We've been in a reactionary mode for a long time, it's hard to get people to think pro-actively.
Again , that map is just an educated guess. The water is too localized to just dig a hole and measure it. Drilling four test holes in every quarter would get a much better picture, but nobody can afford that expense. |
