WC Illinois | West,
Follow along! Us cover croppers may have taken over this site, but its such a great way to share information. Dad cover cropped early in his career (early 80s) and got away from it due to the cold wet conditions left in the spring. He brought this young buck on a few years ago and we are trying to resurrect the practice with the modifications we are talking about (bare spring seedbed).
Joel is a great asset. He focuses on organic but we can learn so much from his work. I just started following him this summer, he had a great field day and every piece of cover crop research you can find in the last 10years has his name on it somewhere. It would be worth your time to meet with him sometime and look over his research farm, I'm sure he would be glad to.
As for getting over the fields to spray in spring, I know we are taking a chance with that and with getting the ammonia on. Thats why a part of me wants to go out and hit the radishes now with simazine to clean things up. The radishes have done their thing as far as I am concerned and it is plenty dry now. Maybe we should be thinking side dress on the nitrogen, but we have been planting directly over the ammonia for a few years now and like how everything greens up and takes off at the same time (no more yellow corn...never want it to have a bad day!)
Glad to build a network on here. If you ever take a trip to St. Louis and have time to drop by we are a 1/4mi off 67 right when you get into Godfrey, Illinois, be happy to show you the plot/chat some more!! | |
