Make sure you read the screen and follow the directions. Been a long time but I think after you select adaptive curve, you need to tell it you are starting. Also if you turn right it will only put guidance to the right.
Another thing about adaptive curve is that if you stop and coast back an inch or 2, it'll think you turned around(may have been fixed by now).
