Pocahontas County, IA | I was in Future Farmers of America during the Nixon Price Freeze. We visited our fellow FFA members farms to see their livestock projects. At one of my classmates farms I saw the biggest market steers I had ever seen in my life, easily 1200-1400#/steers. Years later I learned my classmates father bet the farm, so to speak, that once the price controls were removed beef prices would rocket even higher. Once controls were lifted the market dropped like a rock and this farmer had a lot full of over 1600# steers. The critters were so big that sometimes they couldn't get back up once they layed down. A tractor and loader had to be used help them back up. No nearby packer wanted such huge animals. Supposedly they were shipped to a Kosher packing house in Chicago at a discounted price. Good old days... | |
