Actually, you won it just a tad too soon. Around mid Oct is when iOS 5 will be released and any new iPad with 5 installed will not need iTunes - even to activate it.
So it's his misfortune to actually have a product before the manufacturer decided to make it usable in the way that it ought to have been from the initial launch... Good plan, Steve; way to impress...
