How much tractor do I need?

It doesn't really matter what size tractor as long as it's large enough to pull the equipment being used. I agree, find and purchase some good servicable tillage equipment, then buy a decent tractor that will pull it. If you are not mechanically knowledgeable about equipment and tractors yourself, take along a friend who knows what to look for.

Whether it's 50hp or 150hp really doesn't make that much difference in your situation. Some larger implements with removable wings such as cultivators or disks can be made smaller in order to pull with a smaller tractor. The above example of a 25' field cultivator that needs 100HP to pull might be easily converted to a 15' field cultivator that only requires 60HP. That also gives you some spare parts too LOL.
