I think you misunderstood me. The fact is, they kept an OS running for 10 years in a way that it was still capable of running modern hardware (with few exceptions) and almost all current software right to the end. That was the impressive part.

It's always been understood that eventually software and OS versions would become unsupported eventually. XP was kept on the supported list for an unusually long time, in my opinion.
