Also and very important, the PHONE MUST BE UNLOCKED - that is not locked to one particular network or phone company. If it is, it will not work unless it is unlocked.
If you scroll though the info above, unlocking is talked about, or much easier to buy an unlocked handset. These will work on any network with the respective sim.

Also ensure the phone has the correct frequency bands depending on where you wish to use it.


Sometimes it is easier to buy a local cheap phone with a prepaid sim card and toss it when you go home.


I have travelled abroard (from Oz) several times and have an unlocked handset, and have brought local sims and all has worked well. Note - you will have a new phone number with the new sim. It is much much cheaper than using your home phone overseas - the charges are extremely dear. And when you go home , just put your old sim back in.
