Have you looked at Google Sketchup? It might not be exactly what you want, but it is a really good free program. There is a ton of instructional videos on it.
I got my grandson started on it a couple of years ago when he was 7. He quickly got "addicted" to it and is so fast now that he gets aggravated when the computer can't keep up with him.
I would suggest this program for anyone.
It takes a little while to learn, but I'll bet he will like it.
