Western CO | Well it highly depends on what you are looking to use it for. You said internet appliance and book reader but also kids homework? Is that just to do research on the web or do you want them to be able to edit documents, etc?
As an internet appliance they are tough to beat with the possible exception being screen size. The nice thing is they use Safari as the browser and the email app also has a very nice user interface -- easy to quickly pop through your emails, can "edit" your mailbox to move multiple emails to folders or delete them. Also for a book reader they would be hard to beat I think -- my wife uses hers a LOT for reading books and so far has had no complaints whatsoever. I think she uses the kindle reader app mostly because the selection of books is quite a bit larger for now.
If you want to edit documents you can get Pages the Apple word proc. app for $10. Then a stand and the bluetooth keyboard and it's a pretty functional document editor. My wife has also used hers in this way to take notes at mtgs.
I would think if you are just looking to access the web and email and a few other things it would work well. Much lighter and easier to carry around-- wife also has a carry case about the size of a good size book cover (think bible cover) that holds the iPad, the bluetooth keyboard, power cable and probably a couple other things and is certainly not bad to carry. Battery life is great, found it hard to believe that it would be 10 hrs but I think it pretty much will do that all the time.
My $0.02
