I'd think an omnidirectional antenna would be better..NO?

Question: If I set up a network with an antenna on my roof or tower, it's signal will get to the fields on the entire farm ( most likely ) but what about the device in the tractor/pickup/whatever.....will it be strong enough to get back to the tower if I'm at the other end of the farm? I'd think a laptop can only go so far...NO?
