Southeastern IL | We plant 16 and shell with 8 up until last year we rented a 12row for harvest. Didn’t plant with auto-steer and even in the muddy conditions was still able keep on the rows good. Every once in a while where you straighten up the first pass, it’s a little tricky, but after that it was nice. The cart was running full time and 4 - 5 semis to keep up (one 12 row and one 8 row). We bought a 12 row corn head for this fall and still planted with 16. We run a 16/31 and then a strait 16row, and that size will prolly stay around our farm for quite a while. I couldn’t see justifying a strait 24 row unless you were talking 4 - 5K + acres of corn. The 16/31 is your corn planter and your bean planter. You can cover some serious acres with a 16 row and then plant your beans. We would like to have a new central fill which would speed up your 16 row even more. I don’t think there is ever going to be a "standard" as long as the companies keep putting out larger and larger machines. The 24row, and even 36 row machines will trickle on down the line as the bto's start standardizing 36 and 48 row machines.
