Yes, the pour-on is very important. As far as shots, I'd let a local vet decide based on what the likely local problems are. That is why I think a relationship with a good large animal vet is important. I would rather hit them with a vaccination, maybe a 7-way type, when they come on my place rather than play catchup with antibiotics later. North Florida may have a whole different set of bugs than here up north. If you hit them as they arrive (which requires some sort of chute, etc) then you don't have to worry about withdrawal periods when they are sold for hamburger in the spring. Most large animal vets in Wisconsin have their own squeeze chute with headgate they can bring. Some even have a scale so you can get a good entry weight as they come through. So then all you would need is some way to get them single file. My vet charges $25. per visit to bring his portable chute/headgate. Could put an eartag in them at the same time and maybe get a premium for source verified? Jim at Dawn |
