Subject: Re: PTO Grinder-Mixers?

The only brands that I have exp with are Farmhand (no longer building mixers), New Holland (no longer building mixers) and Arts-Way. The only company other than A-W that currently builds grinders is H&S which took over the Gehl mixer line. They have some good features but they don't build a big mixer.

If capacity is what you're after nothing else compares to a big A-W. I've got a 500A which is the model before the PM30. Supposed to be a 4 ton tank but 3.5 ton loads is pretty dang full, it won't hold 4 ton of hog feed. The new model is a 5165 and that one will hold 4 ton of ground feed.

The mill on the big A-W grinders hasn't changed in 20 yrs. We grind with a 2-135 White which has 150 hp and the mill will take everything the tractor has. Grinding through a 3/16" screen gets you down ~700 microns and with dry corn 15% and under I can grind ~600 lbs/minute.
Adding moisture to the corn slows grinding down in a hurry. With dry corn and unloading whole loads in each bin I can do a load in 20 min from start of the load to starting the next which = 10.5 ton/hr. The bigger the mixer the more you'll get done/hr cause moving back and forth takes the same time with 2 ton as it does 4 ton.

If you have tall bins the A-W unloading auger is head and shoulders better for getting up there. I dump into bins that are just a tad over 20' tall with mine, wouldn't really want any taller though.

I'm looking for a newer grinder and I'm not looking at anything other than A-W's or CIH which were built by A-W.

With a little more hp and the bigger mixer tank I think that 12 ton/hr would be feasible for my setup.
