Lots of things contribute to nodule color and N production from them.

Balanced fertility

weather, saturated soils is a killer

heat, it can get too hot for them even underground

pesticides, they are living organisms though pretty protected.

Washed out nodules are common this year and every year but mine are larger and near the root crown so I am satisfied.

I wouldn't sweat, just keep learning.
