Brian, that seems awfully high. We put in a Lowry 250 bu. pit about 20 years ago and it has serves us well except it is way too small. We had a neighbor last summer that bought a brand new 1000 bushel grain cart and buried it for a pit. I would think in your case a new 500 bu grain cart without tires would be way cheaper than the Lowry pit. You would have to be handy with a welder and torch to make a few mods but I don't think the neighbor had much problem doing it. I believe he applied some sort of rust proofing coat to it before burying it.
