Driftless SW Wisconsin

s205 - 3/16/2024 19:56 Russ, I whispered into my wife's ear as we walked to the house wet, tired and frustrated. How do the big cowherds not have these issues? And if they do how many they loose every yr. I just run a small herd of angus and simm angus (60 hd) just enough to run on our 2 pastures. Can't imagine 500 plus cows.

No matter how many cows you have, one way to minimize or avoid these calving issues is to only use registered bulls with good CED (Calving Ease Direct) EPDs from a breeder who believes in EPDs and genomic testing.  We have tremendous tools available these days, why not use them?

Bulls vary enormously in their ability to sire calves than can be born unassisted.  Especially if you save heifers out of him then put another high CED bull on them, in time calving issues go away.

I do agree with Russ that giving them space to move around helps just as exercise does with human babies.
